very well organized book on managing conflict. Has useful power points, quizzes, and instructional materials for classroom instruction. The case stories are simplistic. They do illustrate the points the authors wish to make. However, the students became bored with the same cast of characters that were carried throughout the book. Use of real cases and current events would improve instruction.

the most thought provoking probability book ever written

This is the book we called Feller Volume II in graduate school. We used it to sharpen our intuition about probability. Feller was a master at explaining difficult things in simple ways. This includes the waiting time paradox and Benford's laws. For structure and rigor we looked elsewhere, Chung and/or Neveu. But Feller's books brought a joy and love for the subject. No statistician or probabilist should be without a copy on his shelf!
In spite of the fact that Feller produced one of the most general versions of the central limit theorem, there are no asymptotic theorems or proofs in this book.

This is a GREAT book.
Unfortunately, I lost mine.
I wanted to buy volume 1, third edition, to replace the lost book but I got volume 2, second edition. Because volume 1 is SO GREAT book, I decided to keep volume 2 as well. How can be sure I ordered the needed one?

I used volume I in my class in probability at CALTECH in 1980/81. While never sacrificing rigor, Prof. Feller had the rare gift of explaining difficult things is such away, that they would become not only mathematically clear, but also intuitively obvious.

I consider this book one of the best math books available!

Book is what I wanted, but I'm still a bit disappointed

I usually buy books on amazon.com and have never had a problem before. With this book, the timing was better than perfect, but the edition is not good. I understand it's not amazon's fault, but It has an errata page with about 30 typos along the complete book. I think a couple of them are acceptable, but in this case, the books should be taken out of market and replaced by a good edition.

In the beginning there was Rhythm !

I think rhythm study is highly neglected in modern western music education, I studied piano for many years and of course you have to learn how to read rhythmic notation to be able to read music but there was no study of rhythm itself in all my studies. I felt a need to learn more about rhythm and I started to play the djembe and I certainly do not regret it, for apart from learning to play the djembe I have become a better pianist. This book is great to begin rhythm studies, I wish I had had this book many years ago, I highly recomend it for all musicians regardless of instrument because there is more to music than just melody and harmony, you have to have a good understanding of rhythm also.
But I want more,there are available tons of thick books about harmony but hardly anything about rhythm so I hope the author writes another book.
(I read somewhere that the late French composer Messiaen had compleated a big book about rhythm just before he died, I hope this is true and that it will be published soon).

Even if you aren't a drummer don't discount this one!

As a bass player I'm always looking for ways to keep my grooves fresh. You always have to worry about falling ino the trap of laying out on the same rhythms all the time. This book will give you a kick in the pants though. As someone who has studied music at a college level, and knows how to read music I was concerned the charts would be a pain since I've known how to read music for years. However picking up on them was not confusing at all..and in fact it's very much tied into the way you count on regular notation and it's really not a problem. Afro-Cuban/Latin and African rhtyhms are the focus here but you can use this on anything. I found myself taking a latin rhythm and adding one note here or there, and changing the notes and turning it into a funk riff or something. I'm not nearly done working through this book..some of the exercises are a challenge, especially on a pitched instrument. However in the end they do serve to freshen up your grooves. I'm going to recommend this to all the rhythm players in my band. Thanks.

musical notation

I am finding this book very useful. It teaches important rhythmic concepts in very direct ways. The only thing that I question is the decision not to use standard musical notation. The book is supposed to be for musicians of all instruments: why not write the rhythms in a language that will be understood almost universally by musicians instead of creating a different system (which admittedly is fairly simple and visual)? By doing this, perhaps they are opening up their audience to some non-musicians, but at the risk of alienating the musicians the book was meant for.

About the Author
Rob MacKillop is a performer, recording artist, record producer, composer and writer specializing in Scottish historical and contemporary music. He was recently awarded the prestigious Churchill Fellowship which allowed him to study Sufi oud music in Turkey and Morocco. He has recorded 6 CDs of historical Scottish music, three of which reached the Number One position in the Scottish Classical Music Chart (The Scotsman). After recording much of the historical Scottish lute and guitar music MacKillop is now performing new pieces written expecially for him by the major Scottish contemporary composers. He is Lecturer in Lute Studies and Performance at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Historical Musician in Residence at Madras College, and teaches privately in his home studio. MacKillop has also lectured on the Scottish lute and guitar at international seminars in Portugal and Germany, and as a performer has toured Japan and various European countries. His website contains essays on the lute and guitar in Scotland as well as publishing historical scores and arrangements

Good selection

I like the tunes in the book, and it is definitely helping me learn my way around the fretboard. Finger picking has been kind of intimidating to me until now, but the book is helping me grow more confident with that skill. I am taking one star off, though, because many of the tunes have been transposed out of the keys in which you would expect to see the tunes in any other book of Celtic music (specifically, the keys of D and G), or hear them at a jam session. It would be frustrating if you wanted to join in, but only knew the tune in a key that was unfamiliar to the other musicians.

"There is a multibillion-dollar consulting industry in the world today," Tichy notes (in this reprint of his 1997 BusinessWeek Book of the Year, written with freelancer Cohen) "that thrives largely on the fact that most managers don't want to lead." It's an insight Tichy (Control Your Destiny Or Someone Else Will), a professor at the Univ. of Michigan School of Business, has observed firsthand when trying to determine why some companies succeed and others fail or just limp along. His conclusion: the winners have "good leaders who nurture the development of other leaders at all levels of the organization." These leaders urge their workers to see reality and mobilize the appropriate responses. Repeatedly, the authors single out the heads of successful companies such as General Electric and Allied Signal to discuss how much time their chief executives spend "formally and informally" on teaching. They conclude that those firms' success is a direct result of everyone's pulling in the same direction. The book's argument ignores small entrepreneurial companies where a product innovation, speed to market or customer service can make all the difference. But in discussing large companies, the book is on the money.

It Can Be Done

The subtitle suggests the book's objective: To explain "How Winning Companies Build Leaders at Every Level." According to the authors, there are certain "fundamentals" common to winning organizations: "First, leaders with a proven track record of success take direct responsibility for the development of other leaders. Second, leaders who develop other leaders have teachable points of view in the specific areas of ideas, values, and something I call E-cubed -- emotional energy and edge....Third, leaders embody their teachable points of view in living stories....Finally, because winning leaders invest considerable time developing other leaders, they have well-defined methodologies and coaching and teaching techniques." Together, these "fundamentals" create the central metaphor in the book: a machine.
As a "machine", an organization consists of separate but interdependent parts; requires lubrication and fuel as well as constant maintenance; and functions best when utilized to serve the specific purposes for which it has been designed.Almost half of The Leadership Engine consists of a "Handbook for Leaders Developing Leaders." In it, the authors provide a cohesive and comprehensive answer to the question "How to create a Leadership Engine?" One useful approach to the "Handbook" is to think of it as a "super" hardware store and you have an empty toolbox. Examine everything available. Select only what is most appropriate for your own organization. Then work with others to assemble the "machine" your organization needs. In doing so, you and they are providing leadership. Your shared obligation is to involve as many others as possible, helping them to become leaders also. If help is needed along the way, it is reassuring to know that the authors have created the equivalent of an operator's manual to help ensure maximum performance of your organization's "leadership engine." Whenever it's time for a "tune-up", you will have the guidance you need.
This is a superb piece of work.

Practical, great stories/examples, easy read, good format

The GWU/Richmond book club gave this book a thumbs up. It was easy to read, but full of clear examples of the leadership qualities under discussion. Leadership was demonstrated not just as a quality of the top execs, but for all levels. The handbook at the end was occasionally simplistic, but overall very usable & useful. Worth your investment of time and money.

Good thought provoking read, but could have used more examples from ordinary leaders versus Fortune 500 CEO's. For a small business owner or someone who wants just to be a better leader, there is some application but mostly in generalities not specifics.

Poor Exegesis

The author takes many verses out of context to proof text her points. As a result, she often comes up with incorrect or incomplete conclusions. She seems to have a very shallow understanding of Scripture, and a bit of an egalitarian bent. This may be good for selling books, but does not lead to an accurate representation of God's design for marriage.

The author is also a bit confused. She writes the book as though she were writing to women, not to men. She does not understand men or how they think.

I have no doubt that there are some good things said in the book, but it is not worth the effort to dig them out. And while digging them out, a reader that is not well versed in Scripture may be led to wrong conclusions about what Scripture, in its entirety, really says on the subject.

From a woman's perspective... this book is right on. However, I think the few men who read the book left negative comments because MAYBE they have a problem listening to women and or trying new things (when it comes to pleasing their wife). Emilie was right on with the material she presented; however, she has to remember we are still in a man's world and the last thing a MAN, MAN wants is a woman telling them anything. This is sad, but it's true. My husband is a MAN, MAN... he has to learn most things on his own. Maybe this advise would have been taken a lot better coming from Bob, Emilie's husband. MEN... Get with it!
