Dante is the Man! Great conclusion to this series!

London scared the crap out of me at the end of SB, book 1! I knew she was planning to do something horrid to Dante for his so called betrayal. So I had attitude with London since the end of a SB. I am team Dante all the way and I totally agree with every decision and every action he executed in SB! I knew London had something up her sleeve. However, I had no idea London would resort to becoming an immature semi- drunk! After reading this delicious story and understanding her psyche a bit more, it's obvious her antics and the drinking were coping mechanisms. The little heffa's shenanigans did absolutely NOTHING to deter Dante, however. He loved. He indulged her. He took care of her until she did the unthinkable.....the club scene stunt. He lost control and she broke him. I cried as I witnessed how broken Dante became when he'd finally had enough of London and her antics. The only saving grace is in breaking Dante she broke also. The End? Uh not even. After weeks apart the two lovebirds end up in Paris for some much needed time together.

I thought Paris was the end of the story. I was like damn TB is pretty tame compared to SB. I should have known Dante wouldn't let us down! London's father is still a threat (read book 1 for full story) and Dante knows until he eliminates the threat, London will never be safe. Dante makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the love of his life.....man talk about a freakin tear jerker! After that stunt on the streets of Paris it was two days before I could pick up from that craziness! London's suffering is unreal. Jaci J did her thing exploiting London's anguish! Heavy stuff! Kudos Jaci girl!

The final 20% of the story is worth every single word, every bit of emotion, and every tear shed. Dante is the MAN! I absolutely love this dude and really hate TB is the end for this crazy couple. However I am more than satisfied with the conclusion of the series.

Five gazillion stars for this crazy emotional roller coaster!

So Disappointed

Talk about a huge disappointment in a sequel...I really enjoyed the first book and the way London spoke to Dante and what she said to him at the end of the first book I was really looking forward to starting the 2nd book...I really thought she was going to be this strong, confident woman that went up against him but all she turned out to be was a whiny, pathetic woman with 0 self respect. The book starts off with her having run off like a coward to Italy for 6 weeks. For someone so adamant about how her grandfathers company was so important to her, couldn't believe she ran instead of fighting. Also not sure how her constantly telling Dante that she hated him was that big of a deal when she pretty much still did everything he said and was still sleeping with him...words don't really mean all that much when your actions say something completely different...it got old annoying real quick when it seemed she said it to him so much...seriously...get some new lines. Her idea of revenge was throwing temper tantrums worse than a 2 year old. I expected a lot more from this book but it was really a let down.

Team Dante!!

Jaci J is a new writer to me and I'm so glad I had the chance to read this and Sick Bastard!

I found London and Dante to be so engaging and at times, I was rooting for them to make it work and at times screaming for one or both to walk away. The back and forth, love and hate, kept me on my toes and wondering where they would end up. I found myself mostly rooting for Dante, understanding that the difficulty of the life he came from lead him to be narcissistic and neurotic. Even with the lies and games, he loved London in the only way he knew how. London on the other hand had to accept a lot of change in a short time as her life tipped completely on it's head. Yeah, she had tantrums and at times acted like a 20 something... wait, she is a 20 something! Her reactions and actions struck me as being realistic to all the drama. I really enjoyed the books and highly recommend reading both. You're in for a ride, but the end is worth it!

Updated Review of Thank You For Smoking

The main character is brash, seemingly without a conscience in that he will say anything, do anything, pretend anything to get his agenda across. The book is cynical, but overall is enjoyable to read. The main problem is that it's dated. We are placed in the fast-paced world of Washington lobbyists of three controversial "causes"--i.e. smoking, drinking, shooting (cigarettes, alcohol, guns), the language is hip, the people jaded. However, when the book was written in 1994, technology was quite different than it is today...no Facebook, Tweeting, Pinterest, smart phones, etc. So it definitely shows its age and as such, is dated without the eventual imprimatur of being quaint or retro. Give it another 20 years & this book may well be considered a "beloved classic." I included it as one of our books to discuss in my book discussion group & my sixth sense tells me it will be a lively discussion.

Christopher Buckley's novel is romp with excellent satire, but lacking in the area of a thriller. While I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to attain a degree in political science, enjoys law and politics, or simply needs a good laugh, I would discourage anyone who desires a true thriller. While the mystery within the book is quickly wrapped up (more on the side of the reader than the characters), it is also introduced rather quickly, and is not the focus of the novel. I would have enjoyed more, but all decent things must come to an end.

I saw the movie 'Thank You For Smoking' years ago before I read the book. So from what I remember the book/movie are compatible and the movie helped me to put faces to the characters. I like the different and quirky premise of this book and the writing is OK and flows to make an engaging and funny book that showed a side of lobbying in DC I'd never known before including the gun & alcohol lobbies. I looked forward to reading ity every nite and will keep it on my bookshelf and read it again in the future. Also I want to see the movie again!

Another winner from Dr. Stevenson

This is basically the "Reader's Digest" version of a much longer, more technical work. Thus, the descriptions of some of the cases are very sketchy. Nevertheless, Stevenson's reputation is impeccable after something like 40 years in this field, and you can be pretty confident that he isn't seriously skewing the facts. He seems to be more up-front than in earlier works in acknowledging that reincarnation is really the only plausible explanation for many of these cases. The book focuses primarily on cases where birthmarks and other physical anomalies match up with injuries suffered in the prior life. The book is well-illustrated with photographs, and some of the cases are truly weird. Put this book together with something like his Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation, and your theology will be sorely challenged if it denies the reality of reincarnation.

Reincarnation enters academia

Ian Stevensons book is a superb scientific exploration into the generally more esoteric realm of reincarnation. He has collected over 2600 reported cases of past-life memories of which 65 detailed reports have been published. It is correct, as one reviewer claims, that these reported cases are primarily from Buddhist, Hindu, African or Native American cultures where such phenomenons are more widely accepted than in the West. But this is natural, says Stevenson, as these cultures more openly will allow a child to speak about a previous life without being disbelieved or rebuked as they may be in the Christian West. Young children are very impressionable and will generally suppress whatever his or her parent or the culture does not permit them to believe in. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that there will be more such claims in these non-Western cultures to conduct such studies. One cannot accuse Stevenson of not following a scientific approach (instrumental injunction, direct apprehension, communal confirmation), his book brims with extremly detailed reports from children whose memories have been carefully collected and matched with the data of their former identity, profession, residence, and the way they died. If this is not believable science, what is? If reincarnation is a new concept to you, read and judge for yourself. If you already believe in reincarnation, read and get more rational reason to state your case.

A mix of good and bad stuff

This is definitely NOT the best book from dr. Ian Stevenson. The author has lost his skepticism and most of his scientific impartiality. The majority of cases included in this book lacks strong evidence sugestive of reincarnation, with the exception of a few very good cases. Because of these good cases, the book is still worth its value, but overall it is not a great work. "Children who remember previous lives" is a much better book from the same author.

Great content

This book provides problems based on a whole board perspective, which helps improve both whole board thinking and good technique. Sabaki is not about light shape, but about how to correctly handle and develop your groups. Understanding the balance of power is the biggest focus in the middle game, and this book helps approach it in an appropriate manner. While it can be hard to find the solution, identifying how to respond is good enough if you cannot find the tesuji. I feel that the explanation to each problem is plentiful. It includes variations so that you understand both right and wrong answers. I like this book because it gives great exposure to good technique and reinforces your positional judgment. However, the book itself is lacking in quality. There are a couple (and only a couple) of diagram errors and the cover is pixelated. The font is also unusual (but not necessarily bad). There is also a few annoyances with translations, but it's no big deal. For an example, skillful finesse is constantly used as a translation of tesuji. However, I highly recommend this book and I believe it is a great follow up of Attack and Defense by Ishida Akira and James Davies.

I read with interest the negative reviews of this book. They seemed most concerned with the author's lack of academic credentials, and with this book's supposed "misognyny".

On the first point, I would suggest that the author's academic credentials are irrelevant. The crucial thing is whether his views help you out or not. If they do, great. If they don't, that's a pity. And for a lot of guys (and their women), the concepts expressed by Deida here have been a great help. I would also point out that I have read a lot of relationship books authored by people with all the academic credentials, and those credentials are no guarantee that the author has anything sensible or worthwhile to impart. When my own marriage was in trouble, I arranged for my then-wife and I to visit a number of well-credentialed marital therapists, and most of them were useless. So again - credentials schmedentials. What matters is what works.

On the second point, I happen to know several women personally who are huge fans of this book. I notice also that quite a number of the glowing reviews here were written or endorsed by women. How can that be, if this book is a hate-filled screed against women?

The answer is, it can't be, and the accusation that this book is "misognynist" is absurd. It is also pernicious, in that it cheapens the value of that serious word through misapplication.

The truth is that there are a lot of enduring truths expressed in this book, and most men will be better off for having read it. According to one relative of mine, this book "saved his marriage", and it might have done the same for mine, if I'd discovered it earlier.

David Deida has such a rich understanding of polarity, relationship dynamics, sexuality and life. I read this book years ago and his teachings have really stuck with me.I highly recommend Deida's books and audio teachings to everyone, not just men. I think for a woman to read this book, she will walk away with a deeper understanding of her partner and men in general as well as new ways of being in a relationship with a man (or a masculine partner). For men, Deida shares his personal knowledge about how to walk in integrity with your path and how to navigate and be in a relationship with a feminine partner. Great book!

More of a Litmus Test, but Still a Great Guide/Manual

Hernandez doesn't coddle up to the reader. She doesn't give false hope, or outline strategies that may have worked for someone whose extreme luck got them on the waiting list for Princeton. No, she gives the cold reality, and explains to the reader quite descriptively the process in which a thousand students are selected from tens of thousands.

The reason I say that it's more of a litmus test is that most readers go into this book thinking that ANYONE could follow the pages step by step, checking off each word of advice, and then finding a big, thick envelope waiting for them in their mailboxes with a thrilling offer of admission. They quickly learn, however, that not everyone is Ivy League material, at least at the age of 17-18. No one likes to hear that their child or they themselves are limited, but believe me, having gone through the college admission process, it's instrumental for one to have a clear understanding of what is doable and what isn't. Hernandez does an excellent job of describing what sort of student one is (or one has the capability of), and then shows that the obvious Ivy League-level kids stand a great chance of getting in, as is. She then describes little tricks and strategies for these kids to prepare their applications accordingly, what not to say in an interview, being one's self in the personal essay, and so forth. In other words, she shows the student how NOT to mess up their application.

For those who aren't necessarily Ivy League bound but still very intelligent and hard working, the author gives advice on how to maximize such a person's profile and luck so that the chance of getting noticed by an Ivy League admissions officer increases significantly, though not necessarily immensely.

Most importantly, the author shows that intelligence does not necessarily mean that one is suited for the Ivy league schools; one can be very smart but still go unnoticed to the admissions officers, and one can be very noticeable to the admissions officers but still fail academically. She explains in the book, and I would have to agree with her, that the term "Ivy league" carries a very strong image (and in some cases, stigma) that needs to be taken with a large grain of salt.

If you believe your child (or yourself, depending on who's reading the book) is Ivy league material, then this book will show you how to not mess up your chances of a Harvard admission. However, if you are unsure of how well your child can do, taking advice from such a well respected and resourceful author can help push your chances up, or at least maximize the effectiveness of the college application- which will come in handy when applying to ALL colleges.

I never really thought I was Harvard material, to be honest, but after reading this book, I was able to tailor my college application to land an admission and nearly a full ride to one of the nation's most rigorous and prestigious liberal arts colleges, Grinnell College. "A" is for admission, but I'd give an "A" for the quality of this book.

My daughter and I had just attended our first college info session the weekend before purchasing this book. I could hear so much of what the admissions officer said echoed in this book but it wasn't until reading the book that I really understood what the admissions officer was saying. The book was like a rollercoaster ride - okay we're covered there; oops, we might be in trouble here; omg we definitely missed the boat on that one! Since reading the book we've attended 5 other college info sessions. 3 were private ivy colleges and 2 were "ivy type" public colleges. The most consistent messages - matching what was stated in the book - was that even more than the high scores on the SAT and ACT, the schools were looking for potential students who would bring something special to the table - a special inner drive that is such a part of their makeup that anyone describing them would likely touch on it. The admissions officers also touched on their quest for diversity in the student body although none actually admitted to flagging or coding the student files. I can see from many of the communications that we are receiving from these schools (among others) that they are indeed targeting specific audiences in their diversity recruiting efforts. With regards to how the applications are reviewed by assigned officers first and then either accepted right off the bat or put forward to a committee for further evaluation and consideration - most of the schools did acknowledge that process. Most of them did actually review physical files. Interestingly enough, UC Berkeley strives to be fully electronic. They do not want paper of any type.
Anyway, this book was a fast read and definitely helped me to decipher what the admissions officers were really saying and helped in determining how my daughter needs to present herself in Essays and such. Too late for the extra-curricular boost but she's exhibited the love of learning that they look for in the transcripts.
This book is a must read - preferably while your student is in 9th grade - but still provides some last chance advice if you're just stepping into the reality of college admissions as a rising senior.

A Good Place to Start

I checked online through several college sites to find a book that gives a concise, informative review of the admissions process. This is the title that kept coming up. "A is for Admission" has the details that flesh out the generalized articles in annual editions of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges". Now the system actually makes sense to me, and the book is an easy read. My son just signed up for 9th grade and I wondered if I was starting too early, but after reading the book I believe middle school is the best time to start. The way I see it--our kids tell us their goals and we give them the support they need to reach those goals. This book helped me as a parent to better understand how to support my son. I would love to see a book of this quality that described the admission procedures at California's top universities and colleges.
