Stories from the best-selling The Book of Virtues for a younger audience
The Book of Virtues for Young People is a treasury of timeless stories, poems, and fables selected from William J. Bennett's national best-seller, The Book of Virtues, that teaches young people the importance of incorporating virtues in one's daily life.
The collection, which also includes new material, offers tales of self-discipline from Aesop; poems by Walt Whitman, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Frost, and Emily Dickinson; and fiction by O. Henry, Tolstoy, and Guy de Maupassant. Also included are stories of personal courage and biographies of great people such as Rosa Parks, Abraham Lincoln, and Anne Frank. Like The Book of Virtues, this collection focuses on ten core virtues, from courage and compassion to hard work and self-discipline.
The perfect gift for graduation or other special occasions, The Book of Virtues for Young People belongs on every young person's bookshelf.

From Publishers Weekly
Having scored a resounding success with The Book of Virtues (more than 2.2 million copies sold), erstwhile politico William J. Bennett now turns his attention to what his publisher deems the "growing demand for character education" with The Book of Virtues for Young People: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories; included under such headings as Self-Discipline, Responsibility and Loyalty are works by the likes of James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, Victor Hugo and Thomas Bulfinch (S&S/Silver Burdett, $14.95, ages 7-12 ISBN 0-382-24923-2 July).

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up?Bennett has compiled fables, stories, and poems that have served as inspiration since time immemorial. Courage, friendship, loyalty, honesty, self-discipline, compassion, responsibility, friendship, work, and faith are represented, with an introduction and commentary for each. Classics such as O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi" and "Echo and Narcissus" are indicative of compassion. A sweet, illuminating letter from "F. Scott Fitzgerald to His Daughter" lays out her responsibilities. An account by Helen Keller of meeting her teacher, Anne Sullivan, provides a beautiful portrait of friendship. And poignant examples of courage are presented back to back in "Excerpt from the Diary of Anne Frank" and the poem "If?" by Rudyard Kipling. This old-fashioned volume may not be picked up by today's world-weary readers, but those who do dip into it will find that every generation had its share of problems addressed by eloquent and, yes, virtuous writers.?Julie Halverstadt, Douglas Public Library District, Castle Rock, CO

Gr. 4^-6, younger for reading aloud. Following his best-selling book for adults The Book of Virtues (1993) with a similar volume for young people, the former U.S. secretary of education offers a collection of readings, grouped by theme, on the virtues of self-discipline, compassion, responsibility, friendship, work, courage, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, and faith. Each section begins with a photograph and a short essay on the particular theme, addressed to young people. Drawn from a variety of sources and executed in different styles, black-and-white drawings, engravings, and photos accompany some of the pieces. Typical selections include myths, folktales, historical tales, fables, poems, hymns, Bible stories, and excerpts from diaries and letters. Parents looking for short readings to entertain and possibly inspire their children will find much to their liking here. Carolyn Phelan

Lots of virtues to choose from
By N. B. Kennedy
There are several editions of Bennett's Virtues books. If it helps you choose from among the editions, here's the deal.
This edition, The Book of Virtues for Young People, is intended for children 9-12 and is 384 pages long. It contains familiar childhood stories such as The Fox and The Crow, but also selections by beloved writers such as Walt Whitman, Tolstoy and Emily Dickinson.
The Book of Virtues for Boys and Girls: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories is also intended for children ages 9-12, but it is an abbreviated version of only 208 pages.
The Children's Book of Virtues is intended for children ages 4-8 and is only 112 pages. The stories are chosen for their appropriateness for this young audience (many reviewers mention their dislike of some of the stories in other versions) and include familiar childhood stories such as George Washington and the Cherry Tree and The Tortoise and the Hare.
I thought I was going to buy the one for Boys and Girls, because the cover shows children playing baseball and the introduction is by Doug Flutie and would appeal to my sports-mad son. But in the end, I wanted more choice of stories, and that version just didn't have enough variety. As in all the books, the stories are grouped by theme (Honesty, Loyalty, Faith, Responsibility, etc.), and the Boys and Girls book has only five themes to choose from, half as many as the adult version.
Ultimately, I chose the adult version, The Book of Virtues, because my son is aging out of the younger audiences.
If you want just inspiring stories of real and fictional heroes, Bennett has also collected such stories in The Children's Book of Heroes, which is a brief book as well, just 112 pages and containing 18 stories. And, The Children's Treasury of Virtues combines three of Bennett's books, The Children's Book of America (patriotic stories, songs and poems), The Children's Book of Virtues and The Children's Book of Heroes.
Hope this helps!

Wonderful for Adults as Well
By Jill W.
Although this book is aimed at "young people" and for ages "10 and up" it is a wonderful, interesting, uplifting, thought-provoking, and fantastic read for adults as well! I love this book - I'm 29 years old and I enjoy every fable, tidbit, short story, and examples from history that demonstrate virtues in this book. Easy to read, but not childlike at the same time. I am applying what I have learned from this book in my daily life and life feels so much better to me. I was taught honesty, responsibility, and other "virtues" as a child, but never was exposed to it via short stories and this route of learning. I love this book and highly recommend it to adult individuals of all ages, parents, teachers - EVERYONE. Get a copy for yourself and/or give as a gift. I can't say enough about positive things about this book! :)
