About the Author
Donald J. Shoemaker is professor of sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received the PhD in sociology from the University of Georgia in 1970. His research interests include national and international topics. Most of his international work has been conducted in the Philippines, but current interests include other countries, such as Sri Lanka. Recent publications include the sixth edition of Theories of Delinquency: An Examination of Explanations of Delinquent Behavior.

Take a step into Christmas Past

The novel "Ethan Fromme" paints a bleak picture of life in a wintry landscape. But Alcott finds joy, hope, optimism, and redemption in the same harsh conditions. The secret is in the characters' love for each other, and in their security in their place in the world. I enjoyed this account of a festive holiday in days of yore. If you like a peek into the Yuletide via Irving or Dickens, I think you'll want to add this to your holiday collection.

Aside from the plot whick is light, fast and well built, every one of RP novels is delightful, I plan on reading the whole Parker series lije I did with Rber Crais.

Always a great Yarn

This entire series (and I've read everyone I can find) are what in Australia we call "A good Yarn".

Not full of violence & death like many stories in this genre (although the main character is still as hard as nails) but so well written that you'll read every page without noticing that there's not James Bond or Terminator style violence on every second page. Unless you're strictly a fan of the Expendables or Terminator style of writing, I'd thoroughly recommend this series. Probably best to read them in sequence although not strictly necessary.

The Best Book ever written about Jesse Owens

This is the best book i have ever read about Jesse Owens. It tells you about the tradegy of his childhood and how he was almost killed in a freak farming ancident. Then it tells you about his glourious triomph in the olympics. Then tells of his quick glory and how he was robbed of all his money. Jesse Owens and Steve Prefontaine are the greatest runners ever.

An inspirational book

This isn't just a book about an athlete. Sure, it's a book about a man who defeated poverty and overcame adversity to become one of the greatest Olympic gold medalists.
But Jesse Owens is honest about the turbulent times he endured after the Olympics were over. Just as importantly, he also tells the story about how he almost let his faith in God fall along the wayside. Faith, family, and school are all important given important places in this book.

Fascinating look into Carthusian life

First off, it should be noted that this book really isn't something everyone will be interested in. It's not a popular overview of the Carthusian Order, or an in-depth examination of their spirituality. It is written, first and foremost, as a guidebook apparently for vocational retreatants and postulants in a Charterhouse.

It is a fairly short volume, but it has an overview of monasticism at the beginning before diving into the truly interesting part: an introduction to Carthusian spirituality and interior prayer. It is fascinating and mystical, and much credit is due to the publishers for making this rare glimpse into the interior life of a Carthusian Charterhouse available to us.

The final few chapters of the volume deal with the more mundane but no less fascinating practical details of life in a Charterhouse, explaining to the postulant the rules and guidelines of everyday life, such as how laundry is handled, or requests for repairs in a cell are made, and the basic rubrics of the Carthusian liturgy in chapel. Much of this carries the disclaimer that it will be explained in full by the Novice Master, but it is no less intriguing.

All in all, a great read for anyone interested in the Carthusian Order, their spirituality, and the practical details of their daily lives.

This informative little book is about what it takes to become a monk "Marine." Their austere life and the difficult schedule they live by makes them able to withstand martyrdom that would quail the heart of anyone less well trained or less devoted to finding and loving God.

This book makes clear what the carthusians are looking for when they follow this road. First, you must believe in God. Then you must love Him truly. He must be what you want in this life. And then you must be sure that you are going to persevere until you achieve your goal.
