About the Author
Rob Jenkins is a professor of ESL and the Faculty Development Coordinator serving over 300 instructors teaching for Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education in California. He is a recipient of the Santa Ana College Distinguished Faculty Award. Rob is also a textbook author and consultant for National Geographic Learning. He is the author of Stand Out and series editor for World English, and also consults on state and national projects. Rob and Staci Johnson, his co-author, were awarded the Heinle Outstanding Achievement Award for their contribution to publishing in 2013

Ever since I can remember, I've been fascinated with other cultures and languages. I love to travel and every place I go, the first thing I want to do is meet the people, learn their language, and understand their culture. Becoming an ESL teacher was a perfect way to turn what I love to do into my profession. There's nothing more incredible than the exchange of teaching and learning from one another that goes on in an ESL classroom. And there's nothing more rewarding than helping a student succeed.

About the Author
Ilya Shambat is an internationally known poet and translator. Born in then-Soviet Union, he moved with his family to America at age 12, finished University of Virginia at age 18 and worked in a variety of fields, from computer industry to tutoring. He has translated five books of classical Russian poetry and published two poetry books, "Poems to Julia" and "Cross-Pacific Passion." He currently resides in Australia where he is raising a beautiful daughter.

Classic Russian style in a modern English language poet

The author cut his poetical teeth translating Akhmatova and Tsvetaeva, and you can see how their poetry has impacted on his use of image and his metre.

Let me give you a small example of the verse from the poem "Cobwebs, cobwebs everywhere" (which could be performed to the tune of the similar sounding classic poem "Cobbler, cobbler"):

"Spider! Spider! Speak your mind -
Are you gentle? Are you kind?
Are you, like they say, a fiend?
And who - you or they - have sinned
More and harder? Are you glad
For what you have always had?
Who has made you? Did he smile
To see you to be his child?"

Clearly this sounds better when read aloud in a Russian accent than an English one. It juxtaposes with the childlike images of cobwebs and spiders, sung in a nursery-rhyme meter in broken English questions about evolution or creation, and also shows the spider as an image of the state, making its "intricate designs" on every object, all over the world

"In the desert, tundra, hills,
On the tulips, daffodils"

What do these cobweb laws cast by the spider of the state do? They
"... take what's here
Every laughter, every tear,
Every truth and every lie,
And wring, just like from a fly
Its quintessence and its juice
Its intention and its truth"

Here we see how nothing escapes the web of invigilation and taxation that the State casts.

Another poem which juxtaposes the tradition of the Nursery Rhyme with a degree of transcendentalism is "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" which starts off like the well-known rhyme but which decribes before where you are a mental journey into the nature of the universe.

In a sense it is like a heavy chunk of meat wrapped in a children's woollen mitten.

"Looking in strangers' faces
With an enlightened smile
With angels trading places
To be them for awhile

Basking in timeless sunshine -

Detailed to the max and a must have companion

I have no clue why anyone would say that this book is not fully detailed or hard to follow concerning maps but regardless do not listen.. Here is the gist on the first reviewers issue on the treasure maps which is that there are maps but the in game map they give you for treasures is a scrap with landscapes on them, in order for you to find them you have to use your head.. On the in game map legend, the map that comes with your game, you know the huge one that folds out that you should get with the game and is also in the book.. You must look at your scraps of treasure maps that will show you a tree with some terrain on it, or a rock formation, maybe a river and at that point you have to identify that terrain on your map, once you locate the terrain on your paper map then waypoint it on the in game map legend(easy as can be)

I mean I'm not tryin to be rude but this is a strategy guide not a cheat book, you still have to think and you cant just rely on the book to do everything..Whats the fun in that..Waypoints are going to be one of your best friends in finding all the extras, you can use the nice track feature to lead you to outfit objectives

This book has the full details you will need to complete all missions, all side quests, treasure finds and anything else you will need that I didn't mention..You should have no problem with this book, it's an easy step by step book categorized in sections, I would never have found out about half of the different quests on this game without it..Particularly the treasure maps and also the flowers and hunting achievements which were all really cool to do I might add, not to mention the DLC information that is only available in book form in this game of the year edition..Hey, it's even a hardcover..Cant beat that(There is a map in the book that will tell you exactly where the treasures, outfits, certain animals and also stranger mission locations that way you may waypoint them on your in game legend...You WILL have to look for the treasure visually once you get there but it is not difficult with the scrap and also the description...Once level 10 is completed it will give you a satchel that allows you to carry more consumable items

I would have to suggest getting this book with the game as it is endless in the amount of things to do. In some cases, the maps and tidbits will be of utmost importance to achieve 100 percent completion. Achieving 100 percent completion will give you a pinkerton outfit, which allows you to have the authority of being the highest law enforcement agent in the game. This allowing you to have free will, to do what you please, almost anywhere with no consequences. The game of the year edition companion book has a decently thorough review by me also

Another Important aspect of the game is the ambient challenges, treasures and outfit objectives. You may consider doing these all first and the Reason I say that is because certain outfits will help you immensely. The deadly assassin outfit for instance, will refill your dead eye twice as fast..When fighting constantly it will make a big difference.

Master Hunter: When you unlock the Master hunter outfit. It will reward you with you twice the pelts, meat and other items when hunting(While wearing it)..Achieving master hunter will give you viddles to refill health out of your hunted prey, or achieving level 5 gives you the buffalo rifle.

Survivalist: This is tedious, rather they all are in each their own way but purchase a survivalist map to use at the general store, use it once in the area of which your map states that herb or flower will be in. Once at level 5 these maps last longer, then at level 10 you have the ability to harvest plants to make a consumable items to refill your deadeye.

Sharpshooter: At level 5 mastery you will have more ammo within the chests/drawers in your save area, or waking at your campsite. At level 10 mastery you are rewarded with dead eye that replenishes while shooting targets.

These are the most tedious things to do in the game, they take the longest, and some cannot be done till certain areas are unlocked. Though once your whole map is unlocked, like mexico and tall trees then get these done as they will make the game more fun to play through, with the special abilities. If you wait to get them, you will have to go through all this after story mode which may deter you from 100% completion. After the story missions are done, there are no more, so better to use the special things during story mode(It makes it more fun)

One personal piece of important hinting from me(out of experience in the game) is that hunting will allow you to reap the most money benefits in the game. Hunt as much big game as possible, "I spend days just hunting grizzly in tall trees"(tall trees is the most abundant and dangerous hunting ground). "I hunt till I literally have 50-100 grizzly, big cat, boar(Boar will be available to you sooner than grizzly as tall trees is locked at first) pelts. After, I travel to mexico and sell them. The Reasons for this are, they pay the most because they are the farthest from tall trees. Once you sell them, you will have a seemingly inexhaustible supply of money for consumables, guns and ammo..The Lemat revolver and buffalo rifle are themselves hundreds of dollars! In my biggest trip I raked in 13,000 dollars from pelts,meat, and also other sellable parts from the carcass, so it is worth it..Be careful as hunting is as dangerous as it is profitable, more than once I was attacked by two to four grizzlys or 5 wolves. As A matter of fact it will happen often..After such money gains it is just easier not having to worry about grabbing ammo from the dead, or when you save, either way it wont be that much..This also will give you the ability to buy consumables as you please, like moonshine (refills deadeye) or medicine(IMPORTANT! will heal you in the middle of a fight) or horse pills/apples (Also very important as when you need to get somewhere by horse fast or are being chased it refills stamina so your horse doesn't throw you as he will tire easily) very important in the U.S Marshall outfit challenge! SAVE SAVE SAVE! When you have enough pelts while hunting, or Items that you do NOT want to lose if you die, then I suggest you save as much as possible using your campsite because when you die ANYTHING unsaved will be gone! It is really annoying, I forget sometimes...

All above are the hardest thing to do in the game as they also take the most time. When possible, make your game experience more rewarding, it is better to do them early. They may be the most difficult to understand within the book which is why I'm going into such detail, these are the things I wished I knew before starting also
Certain things I have found out like anything that has to do with a poker game challenge in-game it will tell you that you have to beat everyone at a table in a game of poker, well my personal tip is use the elegant suit which allows you to cheat at cards then get caught cheating?! Why? lol well when they challenge you to a shootout in the street, DISARM them, walk back in and keep doing until you have only one guy left to play..Just easier that way, takes less time, make sure you don't kill them though or else you wont be able to play again for a while..

Another thing is when doing bounties, get the outfits first if you can(You will have to do at least a few without the outfit) because when you have a bollard twin outfit and you go after a bollard twin bounty you may ride up unnoticed as an enemy right to your bounty target..Much easier!

Lots of general information, but not that in-depth

The guide comes in a nice hardbound cover which I wasn't expecting. There is a decent amount of general information that will help with the 100% completion of the game. Unfortunately, most of the quests are given nothing more than a general overview. Nothing really in the guide to show you which missions to do in a certain order or detailed maps about where to find treasures. I also found that the online wiki gives better information on how to win at the mini-games or how to beat certain missions. Unless you are a collector of strategy guides, the online resources are much more helpful.

Must have for RDR fans

This is a great hard cover book that is worth the money if you have spent any time exploring the RDR world. This book throughly covers the complete story and contains information that is not present in the previously published guide book. I had to keep reading

The Burning Bride takes place in modern day India. The central story revolves around an archaic practice known as the dowry.

A dowry is given by the bride's family in the form of money or gifts to the groom as part of the marriage contract. Although the giving and receiving of a dowry has been illegal for decades, it is a deeply ingrained custom in a culture that is millennia old.

Uma marries into a family who doesn't possess the sense of honor most Indians have. They extort money from her parents and when the money is gone, the bride is considered of no more use. That is when the death threats begin.

One element of the story that really impressed me was it's multi-character cast. The author did a wonderful job of creating numerous, yet distinct and believable characters. The author also forces the reader to connect with them, pulling out an array of emotions.

Although there are many characters and subplots, the author manages to keep the reader's attention with the plot's quick pacing and easy to read style. Yet, they never glossed over pertinent information to achieve this effect.

Overall, The Burning Bride is a compelling and gripping novel. I had to keep reading, needing to know what was going to happen to the protagonist. Yet, at the same time, I was caught up in the history, culture and story of the moment. Need I say more?

Fascinating story, highly recommended!

The Burning Bride is the story of Uma, a young woman, whose life changes when she marries Vijay. Uma’s family have already given Madhu, her mother-in-law, a dowry (the payment that the bride’s family make to the groom’s family for the wedding). But when Uma moves in with Madhu, Vijay and their family, Madhu increases the pressure on Uma and her parents for further dowry payments.

The story, released on International Women’s Day, is told from the point of view of nine different women, including Uma and Madhu. It provides a fascinating insight into the practice of dowry which is, amazingly, regularly still expected despite being made illegal many years ago. Without wanting to give away too many spoilers, the book covers a range of controversial issues including violence towards women. The fact that it is told from the perspectives of both the victim and the perpetrator gives this book its strength. As Uma’s life becomes increasingly difficult, it is interesting to see how the other characters rationalise their behaviour in their own minds. The dynamics of the relationship between Uma and her mother-in-law, Madhu, are particularly compelling.

The Burning Bride is a thought provoking, absorbing read, with a real focus on character development. I really loved Part V, it was the perfect ending. Highly recommended.

Affected me deeply. Had me crying.

Very Compelling read. I was deeply affected by the story -how the dowry system is destroying women's lives and is still widespread in spite of being illegal. Uma's story had me crying in parts. Her dreams of a happy,married life are not fulfilled as the torture starts and continues by the mother in law demanding more and more dowry.The author has skilfully woven all the characters to make an excellent read. One day I started reading in bed at 11p.m. and when I next looked at the clock it was 2 a.m. -I had been so engrossed in the story.
I have now bought the paper copy and am going to re-read it.
Highly recommended. !

Skeptics, prepare for a surprise: this is an energetic and mostly entertaining debut, a novel only Moon Unit Zappa could have written. The novel concerns one America Throne, the opinionated daughter of famous avant-garde artist Boris Throne: she's funny, she's familiar with self-pity, she's looking for love and she's dealing with "how difficult it is to be hippie royalty AND try to find your own identity in the shadow of a certifiable self-made `genius.' " For those who haven't heard of Zappa's father, Frank, the legendary composer and front man of the Mothers of Invention, it's pointless to attempt to explain him here. But the biographical parallels are obvious enough that it's unclear whether Zappa really wants readers to believe America is a fictional character. The novel reads like an obsessive, bipolar journal of disaster and heartache: America is dumped by her artist boyfriend, Jasper, which launches her on a hell-bent roller-coaster ride of self-loathing and self-discovery. Her aggrandized notion of her own hardships is often patently hilarious: "we drove past a mural of anguished faces and raised fists... Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Che Guevara, Gandhi, and that guy with all the grapes. They knew what I was talking about." It's hard not to enjoy America's attitude and observational powers, but the novel is also exasperatingly self-indulgent: song lyrics open every chapter, and too often they're inexcusably facile choices like " `Why?' Annie Lennox" or "Hooray for Hollywood" Author Unknown" (that would be Johnny Mercer, by the way). Although the novel lacks any real perspective on America's repeated falls from grace, her giddy highs and crushing lows make for a refreshingly honest and eye-opening read. Agent, Jimmy Vines. Janeane Garofalo I couldn't put this emotional, hilarious, painfully honest novel down....I laughed my ass off. I loved this book.

Alanis Morissette The courage, unapologetic honesty, egolessness, and humor of America the Beautiful made me smile from ear to ear....Truly inspiring!

Diane Leslie author of Fleur De Leigh's Life of Crime A terrific writer, Moon Unit Zappa kept me laughing and rooting for Ms. America to the last page.

As a pre-mid-life-35ish woman who is still searching for her "thing," I saw myself in this book. The insecurities, doubts, obsessions, and idiosyncrasies from teen years are still there for us all whether we admit it or not. Through her character, America, Moon brings the raw, inner world of she-dom to the forefront. America is stubborn, willful, and totally likeable - the girlfriend we all have...or are. I can't help but wonder how much of the tale is autobiographical, but that only makes the characters more endearing. As I read this book, I couldn't help but compare it to Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity." It's about relationships and life and how they seem to come together somehow, eventually. It's about the path.

The thing you have to get past in this book is that the author, Moon Unit Zappa, is very obviously talking about her own life. No one will be fooled by her changing the name of the lead character's, America, father into Boris Throne and changing his occupation from legendary composer to legendary artist. She is most definitely speaking of her own father, Frank Zappa.
But the emotion and feelings expressed by America and her crazy way of over reacting to things is enough for her to win you over. Regardless if she is truly fictitious or not. Her life, while quite different from most, I would imagine, mirrors our own in a way we can actually relate with. Sure, your relationship issues probably do not stem from the fact that your father would bring many naked people over for the sake of his art but you probably have issues none the less. Who has not been so blinded with love that you did not see the break-up coming, or fallen in love with the perfect, unattainable person?
Reading this book is much like having a close gal pal sharing about her mixed-up love life.

America the Beautiful by Moon Unit Zappa is a novel about a young woman by the name of America Throne. America Throne is the daughter of a very famous painter by the name of Boris Throne. Growing up, America never had a solid father figure helping raise her. It was always her mother, her younger brother, and herself at home while her father was traveling by himself. Throughout America's life she would have to learn through difficult ways that she could not trust men because of the lack of trust she had for her father. Unfortunately America has also learned something else from her father, she adopted the bad characteristic of not being able to commit to anything. Her father was not able to commit a relationship with his wife or especially his family. America cannot hold a solid job or relationship, which directly is because of the carelessness for a relationship that her father had for his family.

I believe America the Beautiful, is a great novel for adolescent women and for women that are or have gone through many issues pertaining family, commitment, or self-esteem issues. I believe that Zappa uses great diction and detail in describing the events that take place in this novel. It was very easy to be able to relate to some of the situations that are mentioned in the novel. For example, America is involved with a man by the name of Jasper. Jasper and America have a very serious relationship and plan to get married. As the months go by unfortunately the relationship comes to an end. America, like many other women coming out of a serious relationship, has a horrible mental breakdown. Why is it that many if not all women must result to food to solve the pains of a breakup? I can personally relate to this, as can many other women as well. It is very hard for America to recover from the difficult breakup. But like many women besides food, our friends are always there for us. America's friend Sadie is a young woman who is definitely on the right path in life. She has a steady job, a serious relationship, and she has great self-esteem. Like America, Sadie was raised in a household where there was not a solid father figure. Fortunately, unlike America, Sadie is able to put her past behind her and go on living her life and look towards the future.

I believe that Zappa includes many women's issues in this book. These issues include: male and female relationships, women not trusting men, friends being there for one another, and trying to deal with the hardships of one's difficulties in their childhood. After reading this book it gave me a stronger sense of value for myself. I recommend this novel 100 percent as I would like other people to enjoy the feeling one gets after reading this novel.
