Shockingly terrible

I am a board certified anesthesiologist-pain practitioner with 20 years pain experience. I am reviewing for my 2nd 10 year re-cert, so this will be my 3rd time for pain boards. I want to agree in strongest possible terms with all prior negative one-star reviews. This book would be improved if all the answers were removed, and let the reader figure it out unaided. Even then, many of the questions are just goofy and unlikely to appear on an exam. It should not continue to be published.

I am still looking for an excellent review resource. I am currently using the Dannemiller lectures which are good, not great. Going through a lot of questions seems to be important. Remember that the exam measures your ability to give correct answers to commonly asked questions, not your general fund of knowledge. Good questions are hard to write, so there is a finite number of them.

Waste of time. So many errors, and obviously collected from many people (probably residents, fellows and students) who couldn't sort the wheat from the chaff. The writing is awful and the editor was anesthetized during the final revision.

About the Author

Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time he accepted a position with Penn State University, and he currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Larson is the lead author of more than two dozen mathematics textbooks that range from sixth grade through calculus levels. Many of his texts, such as the tenth edition of his calculus text, are leaders in their markets. Larson is also one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia and the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs, extending from the elementary school through calculus levels. Larson is a member of several professional groups and is a frequent speaker at national and regional mathematics meetings.

Betsy Farber received her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and her Master’s degree in mathematics from the College of New Jersey. Since 1976, she has been teaching all levels of mathematics at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she currently holds the rank of professor. She is particularly interested in developing new ways to make statistics relevant and interesting to her students and has been teaching statistics in many different modes—with the TI-84 Plus, with MINITAB, and by distance learning as well as in the traditional classroom. A member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), she is an author of The Student Edition of MINITAB and A Guide to MINITAB. She served as consulting editor for Statistics: A First Course and has written computer tutorials for the CD-ROM correlating to the texts in the Street Series in mathematics.

Now I have to return it and find this book all over again while my temporary account on mymathlab is going to expire soon. Way to create even more stress for college students. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.

Inside Look at a Remarkable Life

Robert Sherman was always the quiet one when it came to the fabulous Sherman Brothers. So it was hard to know much about him and easy to believe what one heard—that he was reclusive or moody or less involved somehow. After reading his posthumously published memoir Moose, you'll likely feel he was a dear friend you will always miss, but are so glad you took time to get to know. Thanks so much to his son "Robbie" for making available this very special inside look at a remarkable life.

The Sherman brothers have been on the short list of my favorite songwriters since way before I knew anything about them. This was a fun, informative book. I learned almost as much reading about the pictures as I did enjoying the text.

Like many other Sherman Brothers fans, I have been eagerly awaiting this book for years. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many personal stories that provide an entirely new perspective on the life of such a creative and interesting man. The carefully arranged series of short stories that make up this book seamlessly come together to provide an emotional and entertaining look at a full and amazing life. I am so grateful that Mr. Sherman wrote this book and that he and his son were able to finally get it published, without compromise, for all of us to enjoy.

Amazingly Bad

This is a story about a spoiled, self-centered brat, who grows up to be a spoiled, self-centered, whiny man, and in the end gets everything he doesn't deserve.

*Spoilers below*

Kellin, the main character, is the second-to-last in the Cheysuli prophecy of the firstborn which threads through the entire series. He carries the blood of all the necessary races in his veins, except for the Ihlini.

Through most of the book, he uses the fact that his father is a prophet off somewhere, instead there with him, to act out in the most egregious ways... and no one stops him. As a man, he acts like a spoiled child, and everyone lets him, because he is a prince! He kills a few people... whines about his father never being there... whines some more... decides that no one loves him because his father wasn't there, and that he hates the world...

But it's the last book in the series! Somehow he must acquire the tainted Ihlini blood... but how? Through the most incredible, unbelieveable series of coincidences I have ever labored through in a fantasy book, that's how. So, 1) He happens to be making his way kind of toward the stronghold of the evil Ihlini, Lochiel. 2) Lochiel's daughter, Ginevra, miraculously happens to be mostly normal, despite growing up isolated in a tower with servants who are too cowed to speak, an insane demon-worshipper father, an insecure, jealous mother, and frequent contact with the equally insane Sekar. 3) Kellin comes across some nice guy near the stronghold who offers him food and drink. Coincidentally, it's an Ihlini who is on his way to marry Lochiel's daughter, Ginevra. Kellin realizes suddenly that the guy is Ihlini, they engage in a cheesy epic battle, and Kellin kills Ihlini guy but sustains grave injuries and topples into a nearby river which 4) washes him up into Lochiel's stronghold, where it turns out he has 5) amnesia, which luckily enables him to 6) completely change personality so that 7) Ginevra can fall in love with him, and he with her, because 8) she thinks he's the guy she's supposed to marry and with whom she will thwart the prophecy due to the fact that 9) no one in the stronghold has ever met Ihlini guy and 10) despite the statement that Lochiel "carefully researched his pedigree", he apparently never thought to get a physical description of any kind, nor send any messenger sorts to actually meet the guy. Oh, and Lochiel does perform a test to make sure Kellin is really the Ihlini fiance, using the guy's lifestone, but 11) Kellin passes because of the power of his blood. So, Kellin and Ginevra make a baby, kill evil father, and hie back to Homana. Meanwhile, the author (I mean, "the gods") has been killing off every male with royal blood under the age of 40 throughout the entire book. So at the end we get a cameo from Kellin's great aunt and uncles (Hart, Colin, Keely, Sean) who all come in and say, "Well, most of our children are dead, so why don't you just rule all our lands when we die." The End.

It also really bothered me that there are some gaping holes that never get explained. First of all, why exactly can't Aiden ever see Kellin? Because he would want to be with him? So? Does this mean that if Aiden had at least had contact with Kellin at some point over the years, Kellin wouldn't have been traipsing around close to Lochiel's stronghold to start this remarkable chain of coincidences that fulfill the prophecy? Very unclear. Second, what killed Blaise's lir, after all? Lochiel's minion who tried to capture Kellin later? The lion throne?

I am so happy to finally have the complete set. I have had bks 1-6 for years, but have never been able to get hold of the last 2. Every secondhand dealer in Adelaide had my name down for them, but no luck. Thank you Amazon! But to the books... I have never been so caught up in a world as this. Jennifer Roberson paints the characters so clearly, and the story is so wonderfully told. Through the series the Cheysuli go from triumph to tragedy and back again. I have found myself crying in some parts and almost yelling in victory in others! The best aspect was that I never knew exactly how things would turn out. There was always some twist just when I thought I had it sorted. I managed to devour bk 7 & 8 in a day and a half. If you're looking for something to read anytime read Chronicles of the Cheysuli.

I searched and searched for the name and author in my head and one day it just popped in my brain. I found another original print and bought the book. Sherlock, through a glass darkly!

In this e-book (the first such venture from Calabash Press), Barbara Roden has presented 4 Sherlockian pastiches, written over a long period. Chronologically arranged, the stories are: -

1) "The Adventure of the Suspect Servant": first published in the The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures and written in 1997, this is the story that scrupulously adheres to the tone of the Canon, with a more gentle mystery concerning a family where certain items have been apparently stolen and the maid-servant is under suspicion. Holmes deduces the truth right-away, and the story ends on a positive note for everybody concerned.

2) "The Things That Shall Come Upon Them": first published in Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes in 2008, this story should be taken as the model for Holmes-meets-Occult kind of adventures. It is a perfect story in terms of plot, narration and presentation as befitting the style of the author (for ready reference, I would like to draw your attention towards: Northwest Passages). But more importantly, in this story Sherlock Holmes does NOT do anything that goes against the canonical template of his thoughts & action, and the supernatural element is presented with its chilling moments and menace through the interpretations of the events as done by Flaxman Low (I am sure he needs no introduction, nevertheless: Ghosts: being the experiences of Flaxman Low ... With twelve illustrations by B. E. Minns.). And the topping is that the story actually ties up a few loose ends in one of the greatest horror stories of all times (clue: the most-anthologised story by M.R. James). Overall, this story alone should justify you buying this e-book.

3) "Of the origin of the Hound of the Baskervilles": If you are among those who had gnashed their teeth over the rather liberal adaptation of the canon in the final few episodes of the Granada television series The Sherlock Holmes Feature Film Collection despite the presence of the immortal Jeremy Brett therein, then you are welcome to this fantastic re-worded version of the greatest and the most gothic Sherlock Holmes adventure, first published in Gaslight Grotesque: Nightmare Tales of Sherlock Holmes in 2009. With a minute and yet masterly change in the canonical text, this mystery has become a superb horror story (whose potentials were all there, but it needed an author of Ms. Roden's caliber to unearth them so neatly).

4) "The Thames Horror": this hitherto unpublished story is the darkest one in the collection because of the following reasons:
(a) It deals with a true crime (The Thames Torso killings in 1889, coming in the wake of the Whitechapel murders, and yet, in some way of speaking, even more horrific than the murderous spree of the Ripper).
(b) It deploys no gimmicks, no parade of contemporary celebrities, no suggestions of conspiracy theories, and yet presents Holmes with his ultimate enemy: the darkness lying inside the heart of a common, apparently decent and successful human being.
(c) It gives the first idea of "profiling" serial killers, although the methods & modalities are different from those depicted in Caleb Carr's The Alienist.

To sum it up, you would seldom get an opportunity to read Sherlockian pastiches of such dazzling quality at such a reasonable price. Recommended, obviously.

Just about perfect

There are books you put down after the first chapter, wishing you had never wasted the money, books you find readable--but just, and books you enjoy. And then, there are 'those' books: those books you put down after reading no more than four or five pages . . . so you can get all of your chores out of the way, make something hot to drink, turn off your phone, and find a comfortable corner to curl up in--because you already know when you pick that book up again you are not going to want to put it down. This is one of those books. If you appreciate well-written Sherlock Holmes pastiches, or literature with a touch of the supernatural . . . or, best of all, well-written Holmes pastiches with a touch of the supernatural, then this book should be on your top shelf. Ms. Roden has captured the spirit of the canon perfectly, and one can only hope that similar offerings from her will follow. Quickly.

Why only 'just about' perfect? It is not made clear in the book description that the majority of the stories in this volume have appeared previously in other anthologies, which was a somewhat disappointing discovery. Had I known, I would still have purchased this volume--I am a past fan of Ms. Roden's work--but I would have approached this volume with a little less enthusiasm. No matter. The game is afoot, and this volume carries us there wonderfully.

Holmes Pastiches Not To Be Missed!

Ms. Roden has created an absolutely wonderful mix of Sherlockian pastiches for which we should all be grateful. The stories intermingle supernatural elements with pure Sherlockian themes that create a delicious blend for all readers of Holmes pastiches, whether you are a purist or you like an unusual twist with your stories. I was especially fond of Ms. Roden's take on the "true" nature of the Baskerville curse. Each and every word in her stories rings true; it's as if Doyle left behind a few exceptional stories that are just now seeing their way to publication. My only disappointment is that I did, ultimately, finish the book!

Great Confidence Booster!

This book really helped get my mindset in the right place about MLM. I used to be embarrassed to tell others about MLM, but with the facts and exercises in this book, I feel much more confident saying MLM and feel much better about the industry as a whole.
